Kamaz | Tractor & Construction Plant Wiki

KAMAZ (Камский автомобильный завод - Камаз / Kamskiy avtomobilny zavod - Kama Automobile Zavod - Kamaz or KAMA Heavy-Duty Truck Production Plant) is a Russian truck manufacturer located in Naberezhnye Chelny, Tatarstan, Russian Federation. KAMAZ assembled their first truck model in February 1976 and now, 32 years later, the heavy duty models are exported to many areas of the world including Eastern Europe, China, the Middle East, and North Africa. Its trucks have won the Dakar Rally a record eight times. Today Kamaz is the largest truck producer in Russia, and the CIS. The factory produces 93,600 trucks a year (260 trucks a day).[1]. All of the Kamaz trucks have a V8 engine. The Russian Army uses special reinforced Kamaz models as well.

KAMAZ owns about 50% of the NefAZ truck, bus and combine harvester manufacturer.[2]

About 11% of Kamaz is owned by Daimler AG.

    Automobile/Truck HistoryEdit

In 1969 the Central Committee of the CPSU and Ministerial council of the USSR decided to begin construction of factories for the manufacture of supersized cars in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny. Construction actually began on December 13, 1969, but the first Kamaz rolled off the main assembly conveyor on February 16, 1976.

In 1987 the line for the manufacture of Oka midget cars (VAZ-1111) was created. The first car rolled out on December 21, 1987.

On June 25, 1990 the production association was transformed into an open joint-stock company.

On April 14, 1993 a fire destroyed the Kamaz engine factory.

Until 2005, Kamaz had a major share in ZMA (Factory of Micro-displacement Cars) that produces the Oka microcar. It was sold to the Severstal group.

In 2009, Kamaz and India's Vectra announced a new joint venture, called Kamaz Vectra Motors Limited to manufacture Kamaz trucks in India.[3][4]

Also in 2009, Daimler and Kamaz announced two joint ventures in Russia. It stems from a 2008 agreement in which Daimler Trucks acquired 10% of Kamaz. The first is Fuso Kamaz Trucks Rus, with 50% owned each by Daimler and Kamaz, importing CKD Mitsubishi Fuso trucks from Japan and assembling for the Russian market. The second j.v. is Mercedes-Benz Trucks Vostok, again with each party owning 50%. The company will be manufacturing Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses and Setra buses (coaches).[5]

    Agricultural HistoryEdit

In 2007, Kamaz bought the tooling and machinery from McCormick International Tractors's Doncaster, England facility, and in addition, 200 McCormick tractors to brand as Kamaz and sell in Russia.[6] In 2010, Kamaz and CNH formed a 50-50 joint venture in Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia to build construction equipment (backhoes) and agricultural equipment, to be called CNH-KAMAZ Industrial BV. The JV will focus on New Holland technologies.[7]

KAMAZ (Russian: Камский Автомобильный Завод – КАМАЗ, translit. Kamskiy Avtomobilny Zavod, lit. 'Kama Automobile Plant') is a Russian brand of trucks and engines manufacturer located in Naberezhnye Chelny, Tatarstan, Russian Federation. It is famous for its cab over trucks. KAMAZ is a portmanteau which stands for a factory on Kama River.

KAMAZ opened its doors in 1976. Today, heavy duty models are exported to many areas of the world including the CIS, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa. The trucks have won the Dakar Rally a record fourteen times. KAMAZ is the largest truck producer in Russia and the CIS. The factory produces 43,000 trucks a year (2014).[3] Reinforced KAMAZ trucks are used by the Russian army.

    History[edit]

USSR 1974 postage stamp featuring a KamAZ truck

In 1969, the Resolution of the Central Committee of the USSR Communist Party and the USSR Council of Ministers was approved which envisaged construction of a complex of heavy duty truck production plants. 70 potential sites to locate the facilities were investigated. Choice went in favor of Naberezhnye Chelny, then a small town on the Kama River. Its advantages were obvious. So far as its geographical situation was concerned, Naberezhnye Chelny was right in the center of the former Soviet Union. The navigable rivers – the Kama River and the Volga River – as well as proximity of the railway line, were central to meeting all the logistical needs of the construction site for materials, raw materials, equipment, components while, going forward, to meeting the need to ship ready-made trucks to customers. The fact that the huge construction company “KamGESenergostroy” existed in the region allowed construction of plant buildings and apartment blocks for prospective KAMAZ employees to be completed.

Workers and engineers, representing more than 70 ethnicities, converged on Naberezhnye Chelny to fuse into a “melting pot” of the construction project personnel. Orders placed by KAMAZ to procure construction materials and equipment were filled by all the ministries and departments, a total of over 2000 enterprises. Over 100,000 personnel were employed at the construction site itself. The would-be truck plant was being provided with the most state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment by the contemporary standards. More than 700 international firms were among equipment vendors for KAMAZ facilities, including such globally known corporations as Swindell-Dressler, Holcroft, CE-Cast, Ingersoll Rand, Ex-Cello (U.S.A.), Hueller-Hille, Liebherr (West Germany), Morando, Fata (Italy), Renault (France), Sandvik (Sweden), Komatsu and Hitachi (Japan).

On December 13, 1969, ground was broken and the first bucket of soil was excavated at the construction site of the Kama River Truck Plant which was rated for production of 150,000 heavy duty trucks and 250,000 engines per year. The Complex of Plants on the Kama River sprawled over a vast territory measuring 57 square km. Concurrent to construction of the truck plant, huge social challenges were tackled. Hundreds of thousands of people were provided by KAMAZ with comfortable housing, modern educational facilities, kindergartens and creches, hospitals and clinics, numerous cultural, sporting, recreational and leisure centers. KAMAZ was instrumental in transforming the Kama River Area into a powerful industrial and scientific research hub and developing the infrastructure for the suburban agricultural zone.

Every year the population of the city grew by another 30-40 thousand or so. Whereas before construction of KAMAZ got underway, 27,000 residents had lived in Naberezhnye Chelny, the current population has now reached more than half a million.

    Group structure[edit]

    Owners and management[edit]

The main shareholders of Kamaz are the state corporation Rostec (49.9%), Avtoinvest Limited (23.54%), a Cyprus-registered company whose main beneficiaries have never been officially disclosed, and Daimler (15%).[2] After the Panama Papers leak it was alleged that this Cyprus-based company can be traced to Sergei Roldugin, a concert cellist and personal friend of Vladimir Putin.[4]

At the same time, a 4% stake in the company is publicly traded on the Moscow Exchange,[5] leading the company to have many minority shareholders (more than 76,000 individuals in 2007).[6]

In early March, 2008 the Board of Directors of KAMAZ was elected, which included 15 people, including:[7]

The mayor of the city of Naberezhnye Chelny (April 2010 - Prime Minister of Tatarstan) - Ildar Khalikov, head of the management Federal Agency for State Property Management (Rosimushchestvo) - Ivan V. Aksenov, and the Director-General of the "Russian Technologies State Corporation" Sergey Chemezov.
